Benefits of
Transgender Breast Augmentation
Top surgery offers a way for transgender women to reduce feelings of gender dysphoria by bringing the body more into line with the patient’s affirmed gender. Although an estrogen prescription can help stimulate breast growth, many individuals may not feel satisfied with their results. Breast augmentation safely and effectively allows transgender women to achieve the more feminine and fuller-chested appearance they often desire.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Procedure?
Candidates for transgender breast augmentation should be in generally good health. Before surgery, patients should expect to undergo both a physical exam and a mental health evaluation. Candidates must be at least 18-years-old and also have been undergoing hormone therapy for at least 12 months before their surgery. Candidates will also need to obtain a letter of support from a mental health professional qualified in handling transgender issues. Their advocacy means that the candidate meets the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) criteria for undergoing such a procedure.

Process
Prior to implant surgery, some patients might first require a tissue expander procedure to gradually stretch the skin and chest tissues. Once the patient is determined to be ready, saline solution (saltwater) is then injected into the expanders every few weeks until the area is ready for implant placement.
On the day of the implant surgery, patients will be fully anesthetized. The plastic surgeon will make incisions either around the areola, in the armpit, or along the bottom fold of the breast. The operation will take about two hours to complete.
As with all outpatient surgeries, patients will need to be driven home by a friend, relative, or other responsible individual following surgery.
Recovery
After a week of recovery, most patients can return to work or school, although strenuous physical activities and upper body movements, in particular, should be avoided for several weeks following the procedure.
Full recovery and results may take up to several months to develop. Although most scarring will fade, some may remain.
