Axillary Hyperhidrosis (Armpit Sweating)

Most people sweat when they are exercising or are physically active, or in a hot environment. However, people with hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweating even when they’re in a cool environment and not active. Hyperhidrosis can affect many areas of the body, including the palms and feet (plantar hyperhidrosis). Beverly Hills Physicians understands that excessive sweating is an embarrassing problem and nuisance. Hyperhidrosis stains clothes, makes relationships awkward, and complicates other social interactions.

In severe cases, surgery may be the only hyperhidrosis treatment that is effective, and Beverly Hills Physicians is fortunate to have board-certified surgeons on staff with a special interest in armpit sweating treatment.

What Causes Excessive Armpit Sweating?

Excessive armpit sweating may be caused by genetic predisposition, medications, neurologic/metabolic or other systemic diseases, hormonal change such a menopause, social anxiety, stress, nervousness, or unknown factors. In fact, many people who have axillary hyperhidrosis that occurs at least once a week can’t identify the cause – they just want to know how to stop armpit sweat.

Do I Have Axillary Hyperhidrosis?

If your armpit sweating cannot be controlled by over-the-counter antiperspirants or deodorants, you’re probably suffering from axillary hyperhidrosis, or excessive armpit sweating. Approximately 1 to 2% of the population has this condition, where they sweat often and heavily, enough so to soak through their clothes at least once a week. This can be embarrassing and greatly hamper a person’s social life, and then it may be a medical concern where you want to learn how to stop armpit sweat.

Fortunately, Beverly Hills Physicians can help you reduce underarm sweat effectively with a variety of treatments, up to and including surgery. During your initial consultation for hyperhidrosis, your doctor will take a complete medical history and conduct a physical exam. Usually, it’s very easy to diagnose the problem, but sometimes blood or urine tests may be ordered to check for another medical condition, such as hyperthyroidism or hypoglycemia.

Axillary Hyperhidrosis Treatment

When left untreated, excessive armpit sweating will only continue throughout life. There are many conservative treatments that can and should be attempted, including prescription antiperspirant, medications, botox injections, and psychotherapy. The doctors at BHP can work with you to discuss the preferred treatment plan for your case. However, these non-surgical methods may have limited success rates.

The Beverly Hills Physicians difference is that the medical network is equipped to provide highly effective surgical treatments for each type of sweating, including axillary hyperhidrosis. A board-certified surgeon is on-hand to provide effective and minimally invasive methods to treat hyperhidrosis. The most common ones include:

Group 1

ETS Surgery. “ETS” is an abbreviation for endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy, which utilizes state-of-the-art surgical equipment to effectively reduce the amount of sweat a person produces from the targeted area.

Group 1

Axillary Suction Curettage. The sweat glands are removed with a curette through this surgery, through very small incisions. Then, the glands are removed through liposuction. This is especially effective to reduce underarm sweat.
