Varicose Vein Treatment
Varicose veins can be more than just embarrassing. Having these bulging, rope-like veins in the legs or feet may simply be cosmetic nuisance for some, but many experience medical concerns from their varicose veins. Varicose veins can cause pain, a heavy feeling in the legs; and left untreated, can lead to life-threating medical problems such vein inflammation (phlebitis), venous ulcers (open sores), or serious blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
Varicose vein treatment from Beverly Hills Physicians’ resident expert in vein disorders, board certified physician Dr. Ramtin Massoudi, can lead to safe, effective, and virtually painless varicose vein removal. Dr. Massoudi is also well-versed in reticular or spider vein treatment.
Do I Have Varicose Veins?
Dr. Ramtin Massoudi often diagnoses varicose veins on-sight, by noticing the following:
Veins that bulge from the skin surface, and are purple or blue
The veins look like twisted ropes that protrude from the skin
Skin changes, including changes in color, dryness or inflammation
Leg swelling, which can lead to a dull ache after sitting or standing for long periods of time
Varicose veins pain: the legs feel heavy, tired, ache or burn
Itchiness over the bulging veins
What Causes Varicose Veins?
The most common risk factors for varicose veins include heredity, overweight/obesity, gender (more common in women than men), advanced age, pregnancy or standing for long periods of time most days or other factors.
Varicose veins occur because the legs and feet have a unique dilemma from the rest of the body, in that they must push blood back up to the heart against gravity. To do this, the venous valves push blood in a one-way direction, back to the heart for oxygenation. If the venous valves don’t properly close after they push blood up toward the heart, then the damaged vein valve will cause blood to flow backward, pooling inside the vein. This backward blood flow makes the veins begin to swell and protrude from the skin, as a result of the vein walls expanding.
Varicose Vein Removal
After a period of conservative care to manage and potentially cure your varicose veins, Dr. Massoudi may recommend other, surgical treatments for the problem. The main treatment championed by Dr. Massoudi is Endovenous Laser Treatment, or EVLT.
Laser treatment for varicose veins, called EVLT, is the most common way to cure varicose veins, and is virtually painless and has few complications. This minimally-invasive treatment helps Dr. Massoudi locate the precise location of the varicose vein with an ultrasound-guided technique. During laser vein treatment, the affected vein has an optical fiber inserted into it, and a laser light shines inside the interior of the vein. This causes the death of the vein, eliminates the bulging appearance, and then after treatment, blood flow in the faulty veins is diverted to many other healthy leg veins. The patient is able to go back to their regular activities within hours, and the procedure is 98% effective, according to published, peer-reviewed studies.
