Understanding Saline Implants
Saline breast implants consist of an elastomer silicone shells filled with sterile saline solution—essentially sterile salt water—to provide the necessary contour, volume, and feel of a larger breast. Saline implants offer a firmer feeling to emulate younger, tighter breast tissue.
Why Choose Saline
Silicone implants come prefilled in standardized sizes, but considering how unique and different our bodies are, standardized sizes may not be ideal for everyone. Saline implants can be filled to a precise size based on your body type and personal preferences, giving you more control over your looks.
With saline breast implants, leaks or ruptures are much easier to detect as saline implants quickly deflate. Silicone gel is thick and moves slower, making leakage difficult to detect. In the event of a leak, saline solution is absorbed into the body without any harm. Silicone gel can potentially migrate from the breast pocket to other parts of the body, leading to complications if not immediately detected. Advancements in the technology of the silicone breast implants prevent this risk, however.
The Procedure
The procedure for saline implants is slightly less invasive than with silicone implants. The prefilled nature of silicone implants requires the surgeon to make longer incisions. Saline implants require minimal incisions because they are filled once inside the breast pocket.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions under the breast and places the implant shell into a pocket under or over the chest muscle. The shell is then filled and the incisions are closed.
Your surgeon will help make sure your recovery is as smooth and simple as possible, and you’ll have several post-op appointments to ensure the best results possible.
