What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia describes a swelling of the glandular tissue in the breasts of men and boys. This causes their breasts to appear larger and similar to a woman’s breasts. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, in some cases unevenly. While this disorder can make finding and wearing clothes difficult, in more serious cases, it can cause pain due to added tenderness and sensitivity. Above all else, having gynecomastia can make individuals feel embarrassed and significantly reduce their self-esteem.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Studies show that 30 to 60 percent of men will develop this condition at some point in their lives. Gynecomastia is most common in newborns, boys going through puberty, and older men as a result of normal changes in hormone levels, primarily an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen. The condition is also caused by excess fat deposits.

If you feel that your breasts are too large, you should consult a doctor who can perform a thorough physical exam. If the condition is caused by excess fat, your doctor will simply recommend you lose some weight. Beverly Hills Physicians has a team of skilled nutritionists who can guide you through a diet and exercise regimen to promote your overall health.

In general, gynecomastia is not serious and may go away on its own. However, if you experience severe pain or nipple discharge in one or both breasts, or if weight loss has no affect on your breasts, a doctor may recommend a male breast reduction. In these cases where your health is being compromised, insurance-covered male breast reduction is a possibility.

Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction surgery involves two types of procedures: liposuction and mastectomy. Liposuction removes pockets of fat in the breasts without removing tissue of the breast gland. During a mastectomy, your surgeon will remove breast gland tissue. This procedure is often performed with an endoscope through small incisions. Your surgeon can also remove any excess skin and shape your chest to improve aesthetics.

At Beverly Hills Physicians, you’ll find a group of experienced health care providers capable of performing professional male breast reduction surgery to enhance your confidence and return your sense of personal comfort.
