Breast Lift or Mastopexy

Breast related procedures including breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, etc., when combined, account for a significant portion of all cosmetic surgery related procedures performed in the United States each year. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, approximately 381,000 breasts related cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in 2003. With new technologies and techniques being developed, the total number of breast related procedures performed continues to increase in popularity and social acceptance.

In an effort to reduce sagging and to achieve firmer and shapelier breasts, many women have turned to the cosmetic surgery procedure commonly known as breast lift. Also referred to as “mastopexy” breast lift surgery is frequently done in conjunction with breast augmentation and breast reduction. In many cases, breast implants are utilized during a breast lift in order to “lift” the breasts by increasing their volume and content.

As previously mentioned, the popularity of breast lift procedures is on the rise. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently reported that over 66,638 breast lifts were performed in the United States in 2003. This figure represents an increase of 17% over the number of breast lift procedures performed in 2002 (i.e., 56,882).

While the information contained in this website will provide you with a good introduction to breast lifts, it is not medical advice. When considering a breast lift, or any cosmetic surgery procedure for that matter, we recommend that you consult a qualified medical provider with experience in breast lift surgery. This being said, some important elements you should understand, pertaining to breast lift surgery, include the following:

In consulting with a qualified cosmetic surgeon, the patient and the surgeon will discuss the specific changes the patient would like to make to their appearance and how a breast lift will effectuate such an enhancement. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, the decision to have a breast lift is a highly personal one. Properly researching the procedure, viewing numerous before and photos, as well as openly discussing various treatment options with the cosmetic surgeon will assist the patient in making a well established decision regarding a breast lift.

While consulting with a cosmetic surgeon, the doctor will explain the procedure and will discuss the type of anesthesia they will use during the breast lift surgery. At this time, the surgeon will inquire about the patient’s medical history and will perform a series of visual examinations. The cosmetic surgeon will measure the patient’s breasts, take photographs, and may require a mammogram in an effort to accurately gauge the potential outcome of breast lift surgery. Furthermore, the cosmetic surgeon will discuss the new placement of the patient’s nipples, which may differ significantly in post-surgery placement based on the magnitude of the breast lift procedure. Also, the post-operative size and presentation of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) will be discussed with the patient.

In consulting with a cosmetic surgeon regarding breast lift surgery, both the patient and surgeon should be trying to assess whether or not breast lift surgery is an appropriate surgical option for the patient. As a rule of thumb, the most appropriate candidates for breast lift surgery are over eighteen years of age, possess a skin type that has a degree of elasticity, are not pregnant or breast feeding, and are in good health.

Upon scheduling of the breast lift surgery, the patient will receive specific pre-surgery instructions. These guidelines will include specific directives on what the patient may eat and drink prior to breast lift surgery, whether or not the patient should continue smoking and specifics on weight loss prior to breast lift surgery.
