Changing Times

Some statistics recently published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons say that nearly 18 million people received plastic surgery and cosmetic enhancements in the United States in 2018, an increase by nearly a quarter million over 2017. The top procedures included breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tucks. The survey also found that more men are regularly exploring procedures as well. It appears to us that the increase in plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments is largely due to the decline in negative social stigma when it comes to using medical means to enhance an individual’s appearance.

A large increase in noninvasive cosmetic treatments appears to be due to younger women in their twenties and thirties looking for preventative care that maintains their youthful looks and blocks signs of aging, rather than fixing problem areas after they’ve appeared. This includes injectable treatments and fillers such as Botox. These procedures are usually quick and involve minimal downtime. Not surprisingly, that increases its appeal among millennials who are somewhat more concerned with time and convenience compared to older Americans.

In the age of social media, plastic surgery has never been more widely accepted. From celebrities sharing their work online to everyday individuals receiving treatments to look younger and stay relevant on the job, enhancing one’s appearance is becoming ever easier. With so many exciting advances in medicine and beauty technology, more individuals are seeing quick, noninvasive procedures as being akin to improving their looks through a hair or wardrobe makeover.

Especially in an appearance-focused city such as Los Angeles, all fields of endeavor are both crowded and competitive. More and more individuals are turning to treatments in order to gain any advantage possible when it comes to job opportunities. Regardless, it’s not news that everyone wants to look the best they possibly can and are open to the increasing number of options that can help them do just that.
