New Year, New You

Do you make a resolution each New Year to lose weight and get healthy only to give up by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around? You are not alone; losing weight is one of the most common resolutions made each January. Unfortunately most people get frustrated and give up quickly. We have solutions that can make 2013 the year you finally reach success in your weight loss and health goals. A free consultation with one of our doctors is the first step to determining what option is best for you!

The STARR Treatment

Beverly Hills Physicians is at the forefront of the ever-changing industry of surgery by staying current with the most innovative procedures and tools.

For bariatric procedures, Beverly Hills Physicians is now providing patients the STARR (Surgical Tiny Access and Rapid Recovery) Treatment by using the SPIDER System- a groundbreaking laparoscopic tool that delivers the smallest, single-site incision available. Its circumference is only 18 millimeters, or the size of a dime. The STARR Treatment allows for less invasive surgery, which brings improved post-surgical comfort, reduces recovery times and minimizes scarring.

The goal with the naval incision (which is itself a natural scar) for weight-loss surgery, is to not only enhance the visual cosmetic outcome, but also to reduce pain and allow the patient to quickly resume normal activity. Not all patients are candidates for this advanced approach. Our doctor will work closely with you to determine if you are a candidate. Your safety is always our number one priority.

SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

Gastric sleeve surgery is one of several different surgical weight-loss options currently available. In this procedure approximately 85% of the stomach is removed, leaving it banana-shaped with a capacity that is about 1/4th the normal size. In this type of weight-loss surgery, the outlet valve and nerves of the belly remain intact, and its function is preserved, while the stomach is drastically reduced in size.

What You Need to Know:

  • For patients with a BMI (body mass index) of 50 or more, this type of surgery is advantageous because other forms of weight loss surgery either present increased risk or are technically difficult to perform.
  • For patients with lower BMI, it is a good choice especially when there are existing conditions that prevent them from having other forms of bariatric surgery.
  • Although the stomach is reduced in size and less food can be eaten, the stomach otherwise functions normally
  • The major part of the stomach that produces hormones responsible for stimulating hunger is removed from the digestive system.
  • Minimizes the possibility of the patient developing ulcers.
  • Avoids the problems associated with bypass surgery, including anemia, intestinal obstruction or blockage, osteoporosis and protein and vitamin deficiency.

If you are interested in a weight loss procedure our doctor will determine what option is best for you. We individualize our recommended treatment based on patient needs. In many cases weight loss procedures may be covered by your PPO insurance.

Case Highlight

Sleeve Gastrectomy by Dr. Monali Misra

Married couple Robert and Veronica were both obese with multiple health issues. They were fed up with failed weight loss attempts and knew it was time to get serious about getting healthy. Dr. Misra determined both Robert and Veronica to be ideal candidates for Gastric Sleeve. Their surgeries were performed in April of 2012 and as of December they have lost 82 and 81 pounds respectively. They are still on their weight loss journey but are already enjoying improved health and lifestyle.

Testimonial: Robert & Veronica Cordova

Robert:

After a heart attack when I was 37 years old due to my weight and stress, and my wife’s embarrassing moment trying to close her seatbelt on the plane headed on our vacation to the Bahamas, we decided it was time to get healthy.  We had tried everything, “sweating with the oldies,” hip/hop abs, and we cannot forget all the latest and greatest exercise equipment we bought. We lost weight every time we tried something new, but we would gain it right back and then some. I had high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea and my cholesterol was through the roof. My wife also had high cholesterol, sleep apnea as well as diverticulitis. We were in bad shape, and needed to get healthy for our kids and ourselves. Veronica and I had asked our personal physician about weight-loss surgery and she was skeptical, but we started to research it regardless because Veronica and I were getting bigger and bigger with no end in sight.

That is when we found Beverly Hills Physicians and met with the phenomenal Dr. Misra.  She went through all the different procedures with us and answered all our questions. We really took our time researching all the different weight-loss procedures. We decided to get the gastric sleeve procedure, but before our surgery date Dr. Misra and Beverly Hills Physicians made us work with a nutritionist, and that is when we realized we had a bad relationship with food.

We couldn’t have been happier about our decision to both get the gastric sleeve procedure.  I have lost 82 lbs and went from 272 to a current 190 lbs. Veronica has lost 81 pounds and went from 293 to a current 212 lbs. We both are off our cholesterol medication, I no longer need blood pressure medication, I no longer have diabetes and we both no longer have sleep apnea, and now we have a great relationship with food and our bodies.

One of the weirdest things that has happened is that I’m more attracted to greens and vegetables and Veronica used to like sweets and now some things are way too sweet! Life has been renewed for us, and we are so full of energy now and have a new zest for life.

Veronica:

We feel great, and look better in our clothes. I feel so much better going up the stairs, I don’t need to take a break anymore, and best of all when I tie my shoes the bow is in the middle and not on the side! Plus I can go shopping now and buy regular size clothing!  My self-confidence is up, and I feel much cuter. All we do is follow exactly what Dr. Misra tells us to do, and the results are there. We pay attention to calorie intake and the sensation of being full.  We find that we eat so little and get satisfied after smaller portions. We didn’t realize what we were missing out on until we got healthy, and now our marriage is stronger too.

Doctor Spotlight: Dr. Monali Misra

Pic12

As one of few female physicians specializing in advanced minimally invasive bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, Dr. Monali Misra has quickly gained a reputation as a leader in her field. A board-certified surgeon and practicing member of Beverly Hills Physicians, Dr. Misra is most noted for her patient’s weight-loss success and her postoperative patient care.

What is your background?

I was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada and I obtained my medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan. I later completed my surgery residency at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. I came to America to complete my fellowship at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in 2004 for weight-loss surgery procedures. Since then, I have performed more than 5,000 bariatric, advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.

Why did you choose to focus on weight-loss surgery?

I was drawn to minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery very early in my surgical residency training. I knew I wanted to specialize in this field. It was appealing for many reasons to be able to perform surgery though tiny incisions on patients that used to require very large incisions. Patients had less pain, recovered faster and returned to work faster with minimal to no scarring. My fellowship specialty training in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery gave me the exposure and insight into what weight-loss surgery was all about and how much we were able to help our patients.

What advice would you give to someone considering weight-loss surgery?

I strongly encourage them to learn as much as they can about the procedures out there. I provide all my patients with a free consultation so they know all of their options and can make the best choice about the different procedures available. It is important to find a surgeon who is specialty trained in this field of medicine and has excellent experience in taking care of patients having these procedures done.

What do you like to do when you are not in the operating room?

When I am not in the operating room, I am spending time with my husband who is also a Bariatric surgeon.  I also enjoy travelling, reading and spending time with family.
